Max Julian Otto works as a multidisciplinary artist in the fields of drawing/handwriting, experimental animation, music, theater and comics. His work explores different forms and mechanisms of storytelling.
As an illustrator, he specializes in storyboards for feature films and commercials and in collaboration with directors and cinematographers. Since 1999, he has drawn storyboards for films and over 800 international commercials, as well as illustrations for books, magazines and theaters. His work has been exhibited in the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen, Mannheim, and the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Berlin, among others. He has been a guest lecturer at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie DFFB and the HfS "Ernst Busch" (Academy of Dramatic Arts), both in Berlin.
Wie ich arbeite
Der Zeichenstift (digital und analog) ist für mich Ausgangspunkt meiner Arbeit – ein Werkzeug, um Inhalte jenseits von Worten sichtbar zu machen, um Räume, Ideen, Geschichten und Zusammenhänge zu erforschen.
Künstlerische Projekte, bei denen interdisziplinäre Kreativität und klassische Zeichentechniken gefragt sind, bilden den Schwerpunkt meiner Arbeit. Ich glaube an die Ausdruckskraft der menschlichen Hand und die Notwendigkeit des Erzählens.
How I work
I specialize in the hand-drawn visualization of original stories and complex narrative connections. The drawing pen (digital and analogue) is the starting point of my work - a tool to make spaces, ideas, stories and connections visible in order to convey content beyond words. Artistic projects that require interdisciplinary creativity and classic drawing techniques are the focus of my work. I believe in the expressiveness of the human hand and the necessity of telling stories.
Mein Hintergrund
Das Malen und Zeichnen habe ich bereits ab meinem 9. Lebensjahr bei dem Kunstmaler Josef "Sepp" Wagner am Starnberger See gelernt – "plein air" Ölmalerei, Zeichentechniken, Komposition. Später folgten Weiterbildungen bei verschiedenen Lehrer*innen in Sumi-e-Malerei sowie europäischer und asiatischer Kalligrafie. Mein Filmwissen stammt hauptsächlich aus der Praxis: nach 1991 habe ich mehrere Jahre Erfahrungen erst als Produktionsassistent, später als Setaufnahmeleiter beim Film gesammelt, bis ich mich 1999 in Hamburg als Storyboardzeichner und Illustrator selbständig gemacht habe. Kurz darauf begann ich parallel mit meiner Tätigkeit als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner, die ich 2014 nach über 20 Theaterproduktionen beendet habe, um mich auf das Zeichnen und andere künstlerische Projekte zu konzentrieren – bereichert um ein umfassendes Verständnis für den kreativen Prozess und die Zusammenarbeit mit Regie, Schauspiel und Gewerken.
Form und Inhalte meiner Tuscharbeiten sind von meinem Interesse an den inneren Wegen der Weltreligionen und ihren Ausdrucksformen sowie meiner eigenen Zen-Praxis inspiriert.
My background
I learned painting and drawing from the age of 9 with the painter Josef "Sepp"Wagner on Lake Starnberg - "plein air" oil painting, drawing techniques, composition. Further training with various teachers in Sumi-e, European and Asian calligraphy followed later on.
My film knowledge comes mainly from practical experience: after 1991, I gained several years of experience as a production assistant, later as a set manager for commercial films, until I set up my own business as a storyboard artist and illustrator in Hamburg in 1999. Shortly afterwards, I started working as a stage- and costume designer for theaters in parallel, which I finished in 2014 after over 20 theater productions to concentrate fully on drawing and other art projects – enriched by a comprehensive understanding of the creative process and the collaboration with directing, acting and other disciplines.
The form and content of my ink works are inspired by my interest in the inner paths of world religions and their forms of expression, as well as my own Zen practice.
